SINGAPORE — Twenty-four senior engineers made up the inaugural batch to graduate from a new training initiative called the Advanced Engineers Leadership (AEL) Programme on Monday (Jan 16).

Organised by the National Trades Union Congress (NTUC) and the Institution of Engineers, Singapore (IES), the programme was launched last April and saw these engineers being trained in leadership and innovation skills.

Another 138 young engineers from the second batch of the Young Engineers Leadership (YEL) Programme also received their certificates on Monday during the graduation ceremony held at the Advanced Remanufacturing and Technology Centre.

These engineers were trained in areas like technology management and leadership skills after taking courses, as well as being equipped with technical engineering skills.

Participants also learnt from 25 engineering leaders, and entrepreneurs from established local and international organisations, and sat through knowledge-sharing masterclasses, dialogues and networking sessions.

To get them exposed to best engineering practices across various industries, engineers on the AEL programme also visited Rolls-Royce Singapore and HDB Building & Research Centre, and received one-on-one mentorship.

Mr Vivek Kumar, NTUC assistant director-general and director of NTUC U Associate said IES and U Associate will continue to develop practitioner-led professional development programmes to groom the next generation of young engineers into leaders in their field.

Mr David Woon, 42, who underwent the AEL programme said the programme was insightful. “Engineers are great at solving problems but generally weak in networking which greatly limit their potential,” he added. “I personally gained invaluable insights from my mentor and felt greatly inspired to take my engineering career to the next level.”

To date, the AEL and YEL programmes have trained 394 engineers from 86 organisations.
