SINGAPORE — The timeline for the redevelopment of Choa Chu Kang Bus Interchange is within the next three to five years, said Transport Minister Lui Tuck Yew in Parliament today (July 14).

He was responding to a supplementary question by Member of Parliament (MP) Alex Yam (Chua Chu Kang GRC) who wanted to know about the projected timeline of the interchange’s redevelopment.

Mr Yam had asked whether there are plans to relocate and expand the bus interchange, which has been in service since 1991, to address the issues of overcrowding and congestion due to new buses introduced under the Bus Service Enhancement Programme (BSEP).

Addressing the House, Mr Lui said the Land Transport Authority (LTA) has assessed that the capacity of the bus interchange “remains sufficient today”, even with the additional bus services introduced as part of the BSEP.

“During peak periods, the bus operator deploys marshals in the ground to facilitate commuter and bus circulation,” he added.

The LTA has also embarked on various traffic improvement measures around the interchange to smoothen the flow of buses.

“Over the (medium term), my ministry and other agencies are looking into redeveloping the interchange in line with the broader redevelopment plans for the town centre,” said Mr Lui.

Mr Zaqy Mohamad (Chua Chu Kang GRC) also asked whether the Transport Ministry is considering a more holistic development in the area, such as including shops and amenities that are available in new bus interchanges.

Mr Lui noted that the redevelopment of the town centre is done together with the Urban Redevelopment Authority and other government agencies. “I think you’re aware (they) have some tentative plans already for the area,” he added.
