Civilians to start assisting police in noise nuisance cases under pilot project

SINGAPORE — From the second half of this year, civilians could be attending to complaints to the police about noise nuisance in Tampines North and Boon Lay.
This is part of a pilot to have civilians assist police as community wardens to solve such disputes in the community, under changes to the Police Force Act passed today (March 13).
The initiative also ties in with the Community Disputes Management Framework under the Ministry of Culture, Community and Youth (MCCY).
Among other amendments to the statute, there will be enhanced penalties for those who evade police road blocks. Currently, those who evade police road blocks can be fined up to S$1,000 and/or jailed up to six months. With the amendments, the penalty will be increased to a fine of up to S$5,000 and/or jailed up to 12 months.
