Driver charged with causing death of police officer in Shenton Way accident
Police officer Salinah Mohamed died four days after the traffic accident at Shenton Way.
SINGAPORE — A driver was charged in court on Thursday (April 25) for causing the death of a police officer in a traffic accident.
Andrew Charles Vasko, a 51-year-old American, had allegedly hit Salinah Mohamed with his car at the junction of Maxwell Road and Shenton Way on Feb 10.
The 40-year-old police officer, who held the rank of Staff Sergeant, was walking to the MRT station after work at the Marina Bay Neighbourhood Police Centre when the accident occurred at 9.23pm.
Salinah, who had worked with the police for over two decades, suffered severe head injuries and was found unconscious at the scene. The mother of three young children died at Singapore General Hospital four days later after she was taken off life support.
Vasko, who is a Singapore permanent resident, was charged with failing to keep a proper lookout and giving way to Salinah while making a right turn into Shenton Way.
At the time, Salinah was crossing the road with the traffic light at the pedestrian crossing in her favour.
If found guilty of causing death by a negligent act, Vasko could be jailed for up to two years and/or fined.
He will return to court on May 16.
