Health monitoring system to be piloted later this year

A smart health monitoring and alert system will be piloted in the Jurong Lake District later this year, the Infocomm Development Authority (IDA) said yesterday.

Medical equipment will be placed in the homes of some chronic disease patients or seniors and connected to wireless networks such as Wi-Fi, 3G or 4G, so that readings could be beamed directly to clinics they frequent. When there are anomalies, they will be asked to go for check-ups. This is one of the projects under the Infocomm Media Masterplan announced yesterday.

Separately, the Government wants to make the logistics business smarter by helping to make tracking of cargo widespread so that they can plan their operations better.

Currently, only large logistics firms have such technologies. SMEs, however, which make up more than 99 per cent of logistics service providers in Singapore, do not have such systems.

New technologies such as mobile computing and Big Data analytics will be used to help companies track their shipments in real-time.

The Government will also rope in individuals and businesses to come up with solutions to urban challenges in a series of Smart Nation Tech Challenges.

The first one, which will kick off next month, will focus on how video analytics can be used to improve sectors such as transportation, healthcare, retail and security. The technology can also help in providing clarity on islandwide traffic conditions by geospatially mapping vehicle speed and direction. AMANDA LEE
