SINGAPORE — A 66-year-old man was charged in court on Tuesday (Jan 2) for assaulting a police officer and a security officer of Ngee Ann City on Christmas Eve.

Lam Joon Hin faces five charges — three counts of assault, one count of using vulgarities on the police officer, and causing intentional harassment on the security officer.

Lam allegedly argued with Mr Bahari Matsam, the security officer, at around 10pm, when he was denied entry to Ngee Ann City, which had closed by then. A police officer who was on patrol heard the commotion and approached Lam.

Lam is accused of turning aggressive, using vulgarities on Sergeant Adrian Tan Kar Wee, grabbing the officer’s right wrist, and throwing a punch on the officer’s left cheek.

Lam is said to have also pushed Mr Bahari’s chest and grabbed his neck, during the argument.

Lam will next appear in court on Jan 30. He told the court he intended to get a lawyer.

If convicted of punching the police officer, Lam could be jailed up to seven years, and/or fined, and/or caned.

Lam cannot be caned because the law does not allow for the punishment for offenders older than 50.

For use of criminal force on the mall security officer, he could be jailed up to three months, and/or fined up to S$1,500.
