SINGAPORE — The presence of Honorary-Consuls General (HCGs) in 31 countries and cities without a Singapore Embassy have allowed the Republic to advance its economic, strategic and political interests globally, said Minister for Foreign Affairs K Shanmugam today (April 22).

Speaking on the sidelines of the 7th Meeting of Singapore Honorary-Consuls General, which takes place every three years, Mr Shanmugam explained that Singapore’s interests have changed over the years, as linkages with regions such as Latin America and Africa strengthened.

“It’s a different world, and you exist, you survive by being connected and the HCGs help us in that role,” he said. “Today, if you want something done, if you want to understand the local situation somewhere, ... and you want to go and talk to the provincial governor or... the Cabinet, the HCG can play a useful role.”

Since the first HCG was appointed in 1974, Singapore has appointed 31 HCGs in major cities and countries without resident diplomatic presence. They are often citizens in country of residence, and are chosen based on their network and influence within the local community. One of their key responsibilities is offering consular assistance to Singaporeans.

25 HCGs are in town for the five-day meeting, which starts today. Part of their itinerary for the day includes a dialogue with Mr Shanmugam, where they will discuss Singapore’s priorities and viewpoints on regional and local issues.
