SINGAPORE — More covered linkways, elderly-friendly features and lifts will be built in Tanjong Pagar Group Representation Constituency (GRC) and Radin Mas Single Member Constituency (SMC) over the next five years under a masterplan for the towns in the constituencies, announced today (Aug 16).

Each residential block will be provided with one sheltered drop-off porch. Blocks 7 to 11 at Jalan Rumah Tinggi/Jalan Bukit Merah will also undergo the Neighbourhood Renewal Programme, including proposed linkways to bus shelters and bus alighting points. Over at Leng Kee Park will be a fitness-health area with lighting powered by solar energy to encourage green and healthy living.

The Town Council managing the two areas will also build more ramps for secondary access routes, now that barrier-free access for primary routes for each residential precinct has been completed. In addition, there will be elderly-friendly features such as railings, tactile tiles and non-slip surfaces incorporated.

Welcoming the new plans, resident Thanga V, a 38-year-old technical director who has been living at Boon Tiong Road for the last four years, said: “It’s very beneficial. When it rains, I don’t have to worry with the covered linkways.”

Member of Parliament (MP) for Tanjong Pagar GRC Indranee Rajah, who was at the unveiling of the masterplan today, was asked how founding Prime Minister Lee Kuan Yew’s passing earlier this year would impact the coming General Election.

Noting that what Mr Lee did for the constituency was “astonishing and amazing”, Ms Indranee said: “When the baton is handed over to you, when you now have to carry that responsibility and take it forward, we have to have a vision of where we want to go.”

Labour chief Chan Chun Sing, who is also an MP in the GRC, said PAP MPs always try to ensure their residents are taken care of. “Our aim is always to make sure that we take care of the residents well. Once we take care of the residents well, the rest of the things will take care of themselves.”
