SINGAPORE – The Singapore Red Cross (SRC) today (April 26) said it will be disbursing S$50,000 worth of relief items and emergency supplies after a magnitude-7.8 earthquake hit Nepal yesterday.
It will also launch an urgent public appeal for relief and recovery efforts in Nepal. To further its efforts, the Singapore Government has contributed S$100,000 towards this appeal as seed money.
The funds collected will go towards acute emergency relief and recovery assistance for the affected communities and the people who have lost homes and livelihoods, said Mr Benjamin William, Secretary General of SRC. More details on the appeal will be released soon said the SRC in a press release.
Family members who wish to contact their loved ones in the affected areas can register at http://familylinks.icrc.org/nepal-earthquake or call the SRC hotline at 6664 0501 from tomorrow.
Mr Benjamin William, Secretary General of SRC said: “We are deeply saddened by the great loss of lives and the immense scale of the devastation. According to our Red Cross responders on the ground, strong aftershocks continue to be felt adding to the risk of further damage to buildings, many are living in fear unable to return to their homes. Damage to roads and the airport means that getting relief and aid to these communities is also going to pose a great logistical challenge.”
SRC added that the Red Cross Team on the ground has already mobilised emergency responders. The Red Cross Movement has activated its Regional Disaster Response Team and Field Assessment Coordination Teams.
“SRC is in constant contact with its Movement partners, closely monitoring the situation in affected areas, and plans to send disaster response personnel to the affected areas,” said the organisation.
