SINGAPORE — No enforcement action was carried out during the first night when alcohol restrictions took effect islandwide, with the police acknowledging yesterday that some people might not be aware of the new law in the first few days.
“There will be a transitional period of one to two days (during which) people might not be aware of the new rule. The police will continue (to take) an advisory and educational approach to educate the public during this initial phase and monitor the situation closely,” said a police spokesperson in response to queries. The situation will be assessed based on feedback gathered from officers during this phase of public engagement.
Under the Liquor Control (Supply and Consumption) Act which kicked in on Wednesday, public drinking and alcohol retail sales will not be allowed between 10.30pm and 7am.
On the first night, the police went to Geylang and Robertson Quay to raise public awareness of the new restrictions on public alcohol consumption.
TODAY accompanied the group and between 10.30pm and 12.30am, one person was spotted drinking alcohol in public near popular nightspot Zouk.
He complied with instructions to dispose of the alcohol. His particulars were taken down as part of standard procedure, but no further action was taken.
On public education efforts, the police spokesperson said the police will conduct joint patrols islandwide with community stakeholders such as grassroots volunteers and dormitory operators to inform people about the new law.
Efforts will be concentrated on the liquor control areas in Geylang and Little India, as well as hot spots frequented by drinkers.
