Singtel launches new scholarship programme for poly students
SINGAPORE — A new diploma scholarship programme developed with Singapore Polytechnic (SP) and Republic Polytechnic (RP) was introduced by SingTel today (Jan 6).
Worth over S$2 million a year, the SingTel Cadet Scholarship Programme — the telco’s first diploma scholarship — will be offered in the areas of Network Engineering and Cyber Security in SP and Customer Experience in RP.
The programme will have 90 scholarships available each year to top students across these three courses in the two polytechnics.
Scholars will serve a one-year bond with SingTel upon joining the company and also be given the option to take on a part-time or full-time university scholarship after completing their bond, subject to performance.
The SingTel Cadet Scholarship Programme is also the first corporate scholarship that is fully aligned with SkillsFuture’s objectives, a national initiative aimed at developing an integrated system of education, training and career progression.
The scholarships, which start this year, will provide students with industry-relevant training, as well as employment and progression opportunities.
Witnessing the launch of the programme, Education Minister Heng Swee Keat said the Singtel Cadet Scholarship Programme is particularly exciting as it embodies the principles behind the SkillsFuture movement. These principles are developing skills for the future economy, making the workplace a great learning place and committing to lifelong learning and training.
Recognising that these principles are replicable in many industries and other companies, Mr Heng said he hoped more employers will step forward to develop programmes to best suit their needs.
“I hope many more employers will step forward to be part of this journey. Think ahead of your future needs; work closely with our educational institutions; break the boundary between the workplace and the classroom; and put your people first,” he said.
