The Republic will continue to step up security arrangements in the wake of the recent string of bombings in Thailand, said Defence Minister Dr Ng Eng Hen.

“Our security forces and agencies have already stepped up their activities and security arrangements. But if any attack occurs, I think we have to make sure that we hold together,” said Dr Ng.

The bombings late last Thursday and on Friday hit popular destinations in Hua Hin, Phuket and Surat Thani, killing four and wounding dozens. No one has claimed responsibility, though the Thai authorities have described the blasts as “local sabotage”.

Dr Ng said the attacks demonstrated how small arms, including explosives, are easy to obtain by illegal means.

“So we have to step up our vigilance. Beyond that, as I’ve said before, no country is immune. There are plots against us, so Singaporeans will have to be vigilant,” he said. KELLY NG
