S’pore retains top spot for highest peak internet speed: Report

SINGAPORE — Singapore has retained its top spot for the highest peak connection speed at 135.4Mbps — more than four times the global average — according to the latest report by content delivery network services firm Akamai Technologies.
Released today (Dec 17), the report stated that the Republic has shown a 63 per cent improvement compared to last year’s peak connection speed and a 25 per cent improvement compared to the second quarter this year. The peak connection speed refers to the peak speed that users can likely expect from their Internet connections.
Asian countries likewise dominated the top 10 positions, with Hong Kong placing behind Singapore at second place (101.1Mbps), followed by South Korea (86.6Mbps), Japan (78.4Mbps) and Taiwan (77.9Mbps).
Malaysia’s peak connection speed hit 38.3 Mbps, placing it 54th globally and behind Thailand which ranked 18th with peak speeds of 58.3 Mbps.
In terms of average connection speed, Singapore has dropped slightly from 14th to 17th position with a speed of 12.5Mbps, slightly more than twice the global average of 5.1Mbps.
Despite the 1.8 per cent decline from the second quarter of this year, Singapore has enjoyed an increase of 2.4 per cent in average connection speed year-on-year and ranks 4th in the Asia Pacific region, according to Akamai.
South Korea (20.5 Mbps) has maintained the top position globally, with Sweden (17.4 Mbps) coming in second, followed by Norway (16.4 Mbps). Hong Kong came in 5th (15.8Mbps), with Japan at 7th (15.0Mbps) and Taiwan at 33rd (10.1Mbps).
Malaysia’s average speed of 4.9Mbps has placed it at 73rd, while Thailand took its place at 43rd with an average of 8.2Mbps.
Akamai processes approximately 2 trillion Internet transactions each day and uses the data to publish quarterly reports on broadband connectivity and cloud security.
