SINGAPORE — Youths living or studying in the eastern part of Singapore will have another place to socialise, with the opening of the Singapore Children’s Society’s third community-based youth drop-in centre.
Called VOX @ Singapore Children’s Society, the 273sqm youth centre, located within the void deck of Block 44 Chai Chee Street and in the vicinity of several schools, is the first to have a cafe concept.
Apart from an al fresco dining area and an open kitchen and bar, there is also a counselling room, a main hall for activities, and office space for counsellors and social workers. The centre also has three social workers and one programme assistant.
The centre, officially launched by Minister for Social and Family Development Tan Chuan-Jin yesterday (Dec 3), caters to youths between 13 and 18 years old.
Since March, the centre has reached out to 80 youths. Singapore Children’s Society chairman Koh Choon Hui said the centre aims to reach out to at least 100 youths a year and engage them in “meaningful small-scale, youth-centric, group projects”.
Sixteen-year-old Dayangku Norkusuma, who visits the centre thrice a week, said: “It’s a place for me to hang out with my friends and bond.”
