Whether you are struggling with acne scars, skin pigmentation or dark spots, unwanted skin issues can affect your self-esteem.

Research has found that the impact of skin woes is often more than just skin-deep. For instance, some studies show that people with residual scarring and pigmentation from acne experience a similar level of psychological and emotional distress as those with chronic health problems like diabetes.

Thankfully, with advanced technology such as the Q-Switched Nd:YAG Laser treatment, it is now possible to treat a variety of troubling skin problems and reclaim your confidence.

Here, Dr Tan Hui Yun of DRx Medical Aesthetic Clinic shares more about this gentle laser treatment that can help with skin issues such as hyperpigmentation and tattoo removal.

What is the Q-Switched Nd:YAG Laser treatment?

This non-invasive laser is a United States Food and Drug Administration (FDA)-approved treatment for the removal of both superficial and deep hyperpigmented skin conditions such as freckles, melasma and birthmarks.

It is an effective tool for facial rejuvenation, helps minimise pores, evens out skin tone and decreases the appearance of fine lines. Besides helping patients achieve a fairer and clearer complexion, the Q-Switched laser can also be used to remove certain coloured pigments in tattoos.

How does it work?

The laser creates a high-intensity pulsed beam light that delivers energy pulses, released at a mere billionth of a second, to targeted dark spots and coloured pigments in tattoos.

The concentrated beams of energy are absorbed by melanin, the dark pigment found in skin responsible for hyperpigmentation conditions such as sunspots and melasma. The melanin, in turn, breaks down into smaller fragments that are eventually eliminated by the body’s natural lymphatic system.

Who are suitable to undergo the Q-Switched laser treatment?

It is suitable for most skin types and can be used to treat a wide range of skin conditions. People with acne, acne marks, pigmentation such as freckles, sun spots, melasma, moles and birthmarks will benefit from it, as will those seeking fairer and rejuvenated skin. It is also suitable for those who require proactive acne control or wish to remove tattoos without scarring.

How long does each session take?

Each session takes about 15 to 30 minutes.

Is the procedure uncomfortable or painful?

The treatment is generally pain-free. If stronger settings have to be used, numbing cream will be applied before the procedure so that patients do not experience any discomfort.

Is it an invasive procedure?

Q-Switched lasers are non-invasive, gentle and effective. Although the light pulse is powerful enough to treat problem areas, it does not harm the skin. It is known for not damaging surrounding tissue, thus reducing the chances of side effects. Another plus point of the Q-Switched laser treatment is that it does not cause the skin to become thinner with repeated treatments.

Is there downtime?

There is generally no downtime. However, when stronger settings are occasionally used, mild bruising or darkening of pigments may occur. This can last a few days. However, make-up can be applied immediately after the procedure to conceal any discolouration.

How many sessions are required for visible results?

Depending on the type of pigmentation being treated, it takes between one to five laser sessions for patients to see results.
